DeRogatis vs. Art Garfunkel

Posted by s woods on September 3, 2007

Jim DeRogatis harping once again on how bad he had it at Rolling Stone. (The most interesting thing about this 38-second clip is the revelation of how much an editor at RS actually makes… my eyes almost popped out of my head. )

Surfin’ with Charlie

Posted by s woods on September 3, 2007

Since I’m on a YouTube/critics kick today… Here’s another Charlie Rose panel, this one with Sasha Frere-Jones, Sia Michael, Mimi Valdes, and Jon Pareles, prior to the 2005 (?) Grammy Awards. (I’m watching as I post…)

Andrew Sarris & John Simon on TV

Posted by s woods on September 3, 2007

Movie critics Andrew Sarris and John Simon on “Charlie Rose” discussing Leni Riefenstahl (yeah, I know, I’d rather they were discussing Pauline Kael or Weekend at Bernie’s, but what can you do?). This particular segment starts around the 25-minute mark.

Rob Sheffield interviews

Posted by s woods on September 3, 2007

As I said last week, I’m still catching up with some links about a bunch of books that have come out this year. Here’s a good NPR interview with Rob Sheffield, chatting about his book, Love is a Mix Tape.

Also, a good print interview in Fluxblog.

Jerry Lewis shmoozes about Pauline Kael

Posted by s woods on September 3, 2007

A pretty great interview with Jerry Lewis on “The Dick Cavett Show,” talking about movie critics, and with some particularly interesting thoughts on that “dirty old broad” Pauline Kael (don’t misunderstand–Lewis respects her). It’s around the 4:20 mark.

“Rock Critic Blues” on Youtube

Posted by s woods on September 3, 2007

I swear, that’s what the song is called–you can’t make this stuff up.

Featuring Charles Shaar Murray & John Mendelssohn… and, rather tragically, no typewriters.

Old interviews re-post

Posted by s woods on September 3, 2007

rockcritics interview archives are now up to 2001–only six more years of re-posting to catch us up to the present.

We are lining up some new interviews by the way–hopefully we’ll start to post some early in the fall. It’s still going to take a bit of time to get things rolling here, but all in due time.
