Two good listens re: “Louie Louie”
1 – “Louie Louie”: The Strange Journey of the Dirtiest Song Never Written (KCRW podcast/documentary)
2 – July 2002 interview w/Dave Marsh on Speaking Freely, primarily about “LL”
Incidentally, I’ve finally pulled Marsh’s “Louie Louie” book off the shelf. I hope it lives up to its provocative subtitle (The History and Mythology of the World’s Most Famous Rock ‘n Roll Song; Including the Full Details of Its Torture and Persecution at the Hands of the Kingsmen, J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI, and a Cast of Millions; and Introducing for the First Time Anywhere, the Actual Dirty Lyrics).
in ’75 Oui Magazine assigned me to do story on Donna Summer & “Sex Rock,” which they’d read about in Time. Doing story many people I interviewed had memories of “Louie Louie” and I ended up doing a whole section on the song. I call it my Ode to Louie Louie. Stuck it in my “Backstage Pass” on issuu. https://issuu.com/jimmythefinger/docs/backstage_pass_poster_52
Thanks for sending that, Jim. Quite interested in reading the Donna piece. Took a very brief scan and the first line I zoomed in on (presumably about “Love to Love You Baby”): “It’s the hottest thing since pubic hair.”
