I recall seeing a photo of Elvis and Nixon together, taken when Nixon was president. I imagine Nixon cultivated this association to appeal to younger voters and also to counter the influence of more unruly or “degenerate” (as he probably thought of them) Sixties musicians (Beatles, Stones, Dylan, etc.), and also that the affinity was mutual on Elvis’ part.
According to the article, “The meeting was initiated by Presley, who wrote Nixon a six-page letter requesting a visit with the President and suggesting that he be made a ‘Federal Agent-at-Large’ in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.” What the article doesn’t say is just how well this worked out for all involved.

I believe you’re referring to this 1970 moment, Carl: http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/nsa/elvis/elnix.html
